Overview

Cheong-chun Sushi (청춘초밥), nestled in the vibrant suburb of Box Hill, Melbourne, offers a fresh take on Japanese cuisine with a subtle Korean influence. Its location on Whitehorse Road is easy to reach, making it a convenient spot for locals and visitors alike. Upon entering, the atmosphere is lively yet welcoming, perfect for small gatherings or a casual meal with friends and family.

The menu shines in its diversity, from mini sushi rolls that serve as delightful bites to generous sashimi platters showcasing thick, satisfying cuts of fish. The fusion essence is clear with dishes like the Korean-style shredded white sashimi, accompanied by classic banchan elements such as kimchi and seaweed, presenting textures and flavors not often found in traditional sushi bars.

Signature dishes like the agedashi tofu surprise diners with layers of shredded fish, adding depth and richness beyond what you’d expect in this humble appetizer. For noodle lovers, the CheongChun Soba stands out with its vibrant mix of fresh vegetables, wasabi, and a special bonito soy dashi, balanced perfectly with the subtle heat reminiscent of Korean cuisine. Seafood and beef udon options maintain strong, comforting flavors that round out the menu's hearty offerings.

Patrons repeatedly highlight the quality and freshness of the fish. Thick cuts, especially of tuna and salmon, allow the natural flavors to shine through, making each bite memorable. The fusion approach is not only creative but thoughtfully executed, blending Korean and Japanese elements without overwhelming the palate.

The dining experience is elevated by attentive service and a space that strikes a balance between energetic and cozy. Though the place draws queues, it’s a testament to its growing reputation among food enthusiasts who appreciate both innovation and authenticity in Asian cuisine. It's an ideal destination for those seeking an adventurous yet satisfying meal in a comfortable setting, blending cultural tastes in a uniquely approachable way.

It was my first time there, and I tried five different dishes. My favourite was the sushi — a bit different from the usual Japanese style, but even tastier. The cold soba noodles had a strong kimchi flavour, which I really enjoyed. The udon was quite standard. The Korean-style raw fish came with seaweed rolls, which was something new for me. I wouldn’t recommend the fried octopus legs though.

Just moved to Melbourne and my partner found this place online with good reviews. Decided to try it and it was sooo good! Even though our total bill was around $80 in total for the 2 of us, the portion size, food taste and quality makes up for it (or even over exceeds our expectations). Coming back here again some time soon

Love it! The price here is really good for the food quality. Their fish is actually yum. The cuts are thick so you can feel the flavour. I’m pretty picky with tuna, but this tuna here has impressed me. You gotta try tuna nirigi here. Agedashi tofu is even more surprised. Full of sauce and tons of shredded fish. I have never eaten agedashi tofu with this much shredded fish. There are two layers of shredded fish, one at the top and one at the bottom.

Every time I pass by, there's a long queue. Today it was my turn to try this place. They have so many choices, and everything looks delicious. I ordered a few dishes, and wow! I was truly amazed! Every dish was so delicious, l like the vegetable tempura taste is SO SO GOOD , and they also have different drinks, including alcoholic beverages. It's a great place for a small gathering with friends, a wonderful atmosphere, and it's not far from home. I'll definitely come again next time because the food is just so good!

Stumbled upon this place when looking for korean restaurant somehow. I'd like to know why is it named in Korean character and serve Japanese dishes? Anyway we are group of 4 coming for dinner. Ordered separate dishes and none of us went for sushi. I personally was happy with the karaage curry upon that I had, not a single complain over the quality. One of us though was not very happy with the quantity of meat in her bowl

Very friendly service! We dined in as a table of 4, with reservation. The place was absolutely packed when we arrived, luckily we had booked! Our friends returned for the korean style sashimi which was very fresh and tasty. We also tried the Oden Nabe which was delicious for a cold night. The pork katsu was also fried perfectly with light and crispy batter. I would skip out on the rose buldak upon however.

I can’t say enough good things about this place. The owner and staff were so warm and friendly—they made me feel like a regular even though it was my first time. You can tell they genuinely care about their customers, and that kind of service is hard to find these days. The food was absolutely delicious. The flavors were so authentic, it reminded me of the meals I had in Korea. And the Korean-style thick-cut sashimi was some of the freshest I’ve ever had in Melbourne. Every piece was perfect, and I couldn’t get enough. So glad I found this local gem!!
